Base layers and undergarments can make or break your comfort throughout the day. Design and make at least two base layers and/or undergarment pieces that serve specific purposes such as moisture wicking leggings for an early morning commute, a set of thermals for day or night, breathable t-shirt and simple gym short

Challenge requirements:

  • Make at least two garments
  • The two garments must be unique. You can make two shirts but they must have distinct patterns
  • The materials used must have serve a specific technical purpose in the garments (don't overthink this)
  • Be able to speak to the materials and design choices you made

Example garments:

  • T-Shirts
  • Tanks
  • Leggings
  • Activewear/Gym Shorts
  • Underwear
  • Thermals
  • Swimwear

Why This Challenge?

The basics often go ignored in the DIY world but knowing how to work with these materials and patterns will greatly improve your skills in other areas. Many of techniques and principles used on smaller garments or base layers with stretch are universal which is why this challenge is asking for two garments.

This is a challenge; it is meant to push your abilities and ideas. If you've watched any competition reality TV show, you know sometimes you need to trim the fat off your projects, consolidate or align materials and designs, ask for help, and most importantly manage your time.

If you're feeling stuck, think about the season change coming up, what will you need or want?

Convertible Clothing

You're spending a day on the beach, or hiking in the mountains, maybe you're trekking through the brush to get to a beautiful view. Create a piece that is convertible to help you on your trip.

  • Your piece must transform into another piece with both states being fully functional and beautiful
  • At least one state must be something you can wear. IE: A top, pant, functional bag, etc.
  • If you make pants that become a jacket, we should not see pants that have been converted into a jacket but just a jacket
